ST.4 Ions N5 (CCS) Flashcards
What are ions?
Ions are particles that have an imbalance of positive protons and negative electrons, they are charged particles
When are negative ions formed?
When non metal atoms gain electrons
Why do atoms gain electrons?
Because they have more negative electrons than positive protons therefore they have a negative charge
When are positive ions formed?
When metal atoms lose electrons
Why do atoms lose electrons?
Because they have more positive protons than negative electrons therefore they have a positive charge
What are the most stable atoms in the periodic table?
Noble gases
What is the aim in ionic bonding?
To complete the outer electron shell by losing or gaining electrons
Why are noble gases unreactive?
They already have a full outer electron shell so don’t need to lose or gain any electrons
How is the number of electrons lost shown on transition metals?
The Roman numerals after the name of the metal
What valency does not form ions?
4
What happens to the ending of an atom name when a negative ion is formed?
Changed to ide (bromine - bromide)
What are ions that contain more than one type of atom called?
Group ions
What should group ions be treated as?
A single particle
What are some examples of group ions?
Ammonium - (NH4)-
Hydroxide - OH-
Nitrate - (NO3)-
Sulfate - (SO4)2-
