ST.2 Reactions of Metals N5 (CIS) Flashcards
What is reduction?
Reduction is a gain of electrons by a reactant in any reaction
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is a loss of electrons by a reactant in any reaction
What happens in a redox reaction?
In a redox reaction, reduction and oxidation take place at the same time
Metal + Oxygen —>
Metal oxide
Metal + Water —>
Metal hydroxide + Hydrogen
Metal + Dilute acid —>
Salt + Hydrogen
How are metals arranged?
Metals can be arranged in order of reactivity
How can metals be used to produce soluble salts?
Metals can be used to produce soluble salts. Excess metal is added to the appropriate acid, the mixture is filtered and the filtrate evaporated to dryness
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction is when a metal higher up in the electrochemical series displaces the ions of the lower down metal
When a metal is extracted from its ore, metal ions are changed to metal atoms - name this type of reaction
