ST.3 Extraction of metals N5 (CIS) Flashcards
What happens during the extraction of metals?
During the extraction of metals, metal ions are reduced forming metal atoms
How is the method of extraction determined?
The method used to extract a metal from its ore depends on the position of the metal in the reactivity series
What methods are used for extraction?
Methods used are:
heat alone (for extraction of Ag, Au and Hg);
heating with carbon or carbon monoxide (for extraction of Cu, Pb, Sn, Fe and Zn);
electrolysis (for extraction of more reactive metals including aluminium).
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound into its elements using electricity
When must a DC supply be used?
A DC supply must be used if the products of electrolysis are to be identified
What do +/- ions do at the opposite electrode?
Positive ions gain electrons at the negative electrode and negative ions lose electrons at the positive electrode
What does DC stand for?
DC stands for direct current
What is an ore?
An ore is a rock that contains metal
What is an alloy?
An alloy is a mixture of two elements
What is an ion-electron equation?
An ion electron equation is a half-equation, either an oxidation or a reduction, which in combination with the opposite type can be part of a complete redox equation
What is the reactivity series?
The reactivity series is a league table of metals, listing them from the most reactive at the top to the least reactive at the bottom
What does native mean?
Native is a term given to unreactive metals such as gold and platinum which can be found in their pure states
What is decomposition?
Decomposition is when a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds
