signs and symptoms
oedema, vomiting, polyphasia, thirst, congested sore throat, epistaxis, febrile disease, mania, pain in chest, patella + areas the meridian supplies
pathway
-originates at ala nasi of nose at Yingxiang (LI20)
- runs up bridge of nose to inner canthus and meets with BL meridian at BL1
- continues over eye, through pupil and emerges at Chengqi (ST1) in lower orbital ridge
- travels down infraorbital foramen, downm lateral side of nose to corner of mouth
- internal connection curves around lips to connect with upper gums and Chengjiang (CV24) at mental labial gp
- externally continues posterolaterally across lower portion of cheek to corner of mandible and curves up to corner of hairline, internally to GV24
- From Daying (ST5) anterior border of masseter with GV14 then supra-clavicular fossa
- Quepen (ST12) internal branch enters chest and diaphragm continues down to connect with ST and SP before going to ST30 at superior border of pubic symphysis 2 cun from mid
- externally from ST 12, travels down chest 4 cun lateral to midline, passes diaphragm and continues 2 cun lateral.
- from Qichong (ST30) diverts laterally to ASIS in line with lateral border of patella. continues down line
- along lateral aspect 1 finger from tibia after knee. after Xiajuxu (ST39) goes up to ST40 then down to dorsum of foot
- runs b/t 2nd+3rd MT
- terminates lateral side of 2nd toe
internal branch
- tibial branch - ST36 to lateral side of 3rd toe
- dorsum foot branch - ST42 to medial side big toe+SP-M
Luo connecting meridian
longitudinal - ascends anterolateral aspect of leg to torso up to ST12, a branch to occiput then Baihui (GV20) then back down to neck
transverse - Luo pt ST-MFenglong (ST40 connects ot yuan pt of SP-M SP3
Divergent meridian
starts Futu (ST32), continues up to abdomen and passes ST, SP, HT before continuing to mouth, nose bridge and infra-orbital region, curves around orbit and connects with BR, connects to 3rd confluent pt ST9
Muscle region
starts at 2nd, 3rd, 4th toes on dorsum of foot, ascends to tibia where divides into 2 branches - one branch knots at lateral knee and joins with GB, other branch continues to face to knot at mouth, below nose and joins BL-M.
branch also separates at jaw and knots in front of ear
Chengqi (ST1) - tear container
directly below pupil with eyes looking forward below eyeball at infraorbital ridge
Crossing pt of foot Yang Ming, Ren , Yang Qiao
F: dispel wind+fire, clear pathogens, brightens eyes
I - redness, swelling and pain of eye, twitching eyelids, deviation of mouth+eyes, lacrimation, night blindness,
Sibai (ST2) - four whites
directly below pupil eyes looking forward in depression at infra-orbital foramen
F: dispel wind+fire, FF Qi+BL, soothe tendons+relieves pain
I: redness, pain+itching of eye, nebula, twitching eyelids, headache, vertigo, deviation of mouth+eye
Dicang (ST4) - earth canary
directly below pupil 0.4 cun lateral to corner of mouth
crossing pt of hand yang ming, yang qiao
F: dispel wind, relieve Qi stag
I: deviation of mouth, salivation+twitching eyelids, clear pain
Jiache (ST6) - jaw bone
one finger breadth anterior and superior to lower angle of mandible
F: open jaw, dispel wind, regulate Qi
I: deviation of mouth, toothache, swelling of cheek and trismus
Xieguan (ST7) - below the joint
lower border of zygomatic arch in depression anterior to condyloid process of mandible
crossing pt of foot Shaoyang and foot Yangming
F: dispel wind, FF Qi+BL, revive spirit, strengthen hearing
I: deafness, tinnitus, otorrhoea, toothache, trismus+deviation of mouth+eye
Touwei (ST8) - head corner
directly above temporal hairline and 0.5 cun within anterior hairline at corner of forehead
Crossing pt Foot Yangming, Foot Shaoyang, Ying Wei-M
F: dispel wind+clear heat, clear mind, brighten eyes
I: headache, blurred vision, sore eyes, pain in mouth, lacrimation, twitching of eyelids
Rugen (ST18) - breast root
5th intercostal space directly below nipple, 4 cun lateral
F: FF-M Qi, accelerate lactation, regulate Qi in chest
I: difficult labour, mastitis+insufficient lactation, breast pain, pain in chest, cough, asthmatic breathing, hiccup
Liangmen (ST21) - beam gate
4 cun above umbilicus 2 cun lateral to Ren-M
F: regulate Qi in MJ, harmonise ST+intestines, relieve accumulation of stag, tonify SP T/T, raise Qi+ stop diarrhoea
I: epigastric pain, abdominal distension, diarrhoea, vomiting, poor appetite, prolapse of ST
Tianshu (ST25) - celestial pivot
2 cun lateral to umbilicus
Front Mu LI - contraindicated in pregnant women
F: regulate LI, support SP+ST, remove damp-stag, reg Qi+BL, regulate menses, expel parasites+urinary tract stones
I: diarrhoea, dysentery, constipation, abdominal distension, borborygmus, irregular menses, intestinal parasites and stones
Guilai (ST29) - return back
4 cun below umbilicus, 2 cun lateral to Ren-M
F: warm M to dispel cold, replenish Chong+Ren-M
I: abdominal pain, hernia, prolapse of uterus, irregular menses, morbid leucorrhoea
Qichong (ST30) - surging qi
5 cun below umbilicus, 2 cun lateral to Ren-M
origin of Chong-M
F: regulate Qi, harmonise Yin+Xue, regulate bladder, relieve tendon pain
I: borborygmous, abdominal pain, hernia, irregular menses, infertility, impotence, swelling of external genitalia
Futu (ST32) - crouching rabbit
6 cun above superio-lateral border of patella, on line joining ASIS and lateral border of patella
F: warm M, FF Qi+Xue
I: lumbar pain, coldness in knee joints, paralysis of lower limbs, hernia, beriberi
Liangqiu (ST34) - beam hill
2 cun above superio-lateral border of patella, line joining ASIS to lateral patella
Xi-cleft pt
F: reg ST Qi, harmonise MJ, activate xue+qi circulation
I: relieve pain, haematuria, mastitis, swelling+pain in knee, wei syndrome of lower limbs
Dubi (ST35) - calf’s nose
lower border of patella, in depression lateral to patella ligament
F: Free M+qi+xue, dispel wind+cold, reduce swelling+relieve pain
I: pain of knee, wei syndrome of lower limbs, beriberi
Zusanli (ST36) - leg three li
3 cun below Dubi (ST35) and one finger breadth from anterior crest of tibia
He-Sea pt
F: reg ST+SP, reg qi in MJ, harmonise intestines, remove stag, dispel wind+transform damp, nourish true Yin+Yang+prevent disease
I: any kind ST/intestingal condition, post partum fainting
Shangju (ST37) - upper great hollow
3 cun below Zusanli (ST36) one finger breadth from tibia
Lower He-Sea pt of LI-M
F: reg ST+SP+intestines, unobstruct meridians, clear damp heat
I: mainly LI conditions, mania, adversion ot sound of people talking
Tiaokou (ST38) - ribbon opening
2 cun below Shangjuxu (ST37), one finger from tibia
F: soothes tendons, FF qi+xue, warm M to dispel wind cold
I: motor impairment of lower limbs
Xiajuxu (ST39) - lwoer great hollow
3 cun below Shangjuxu (ST37), one finger from tibia
Lower He-Sea pt of SI
F: regulate SI+ST, remove damp-heat
I: diarrhoea, lumbar pain, pus/BL in stools, etc
Fenglong (ST40) - abundant bulge
8 cun above tip of external malleolous 1 finger from ST38
Luo pt of ST-M
F: clear damp heat+PHL, reg bowels, remove stag, tonify SP+ST, calm the mind, clear PHL in LU to stop cough
I: vomiting, oedema, constipation, paralysis, Wei syndrome lower limbs, vomiting, oedema, headache, vertigo, produse sputum
Jiexi (ST41) - ravine divide
midpoint transverse crease of ankle joint in depression b/t tendons of extensor digitorum longs+hallicus longus
Jing River
F: tonify SP Qi, remove damp+stag, clear ST heat, calm mind
I: abdominal distension, paralysis/wei syndrome of lower limbs, vertigo, delirium, constipation, vomiting, frontal headache, susceptibility to abnormal sorrow/crying, epilepsy
Neiting (ST44) - inner court
proximal to web margin b/t 2nd+3rd toes
Ying Spring
F: purge ST fire, FF Qi+Xue of meridian, stop pain
I: toothache, congested sore throat, diarrhoea, dysentery, deviation of mouth, swelling+pain in dorsum of foot
Lidui (ST45) - severe mouth
lateral side of 2nd toe 0.1 cun posterior to corner of nail
Jing-well pt
F: purge fire, calm the spirit
I: epstaxis, congested nose with yellow discharge, allergic rhinitis, toothache, dream disturbed sleep, nightmares, Yu syndrome
