- ensure competence of recipient and their intended use

when should an SQP not supply?
- if they don’t recognise vet surgeon/ practice
- if they are suspicious of tampering with a prescription
- if the medicinal product is deemed unsafe
- if anything contravenes their compliance with the Vet Medicines Regulations
what are the consequences for SQPs breaking laws/ regulations?
- if you’re suspected to have broken the law, the VMD will investigate
- if found guilty, you can be fined and sentenced up to 2 years in prison
what does the VMD have the right to do during investigation?
they have the right to search premises, remove evidence, seize products and initiate prosecutions
what are offences that SQPs can commit?
- to substitute a different product than the one that’s been prescribed
- to change an authorised label or any product literature
- to supply a product that’s not in its original packaging
- to supply a product that’s passed its expiry
- to supply or possess unauthorised vet medicines
what are the responsibilities of the SQP to the animal?
- must ensure safety of animal by asking pertinent questions
- provide correct specified products
- ensure correct administration which may require demonstration
what are the responsibilities of the SQP to the profession?
- professional integrity- following SQP CoPC
- ensuring knowledge is kept up-to-date - CPD
- abide by VMR at all times
what are the responsibilities of the SQP to the client?
- they should be satisfied that the person is competent to use the product
- advise on safe administration and any warnings or contraindications
- SQPs must be familiar with the summary of the product characteristics
- record and report any adverse reactions
- ensure medicine is labelled correctly
- cannot substitute products
- must ensure supply of correct product, to correct named person on prescription
what is the VMD Code of Practice for SQPs?
- if POM-V or POM-VPS product is supplied orally, there must be a record kept for 5 years
- it’s an offence to alter a written prescription
- SQP must authorise each transaction individually and the person handling the meds must be competent to do so
- where medicines require specific storage, these must be packed in accordance to the products label when sent for delivery- records kept of this
when should an SQP refer to a vet surgeon?
- if animal has previously suffered an adverse reaction
- if animal is already under treatment of a VS for the same condition
- animal is already receiving meds and there are concerns about taking other meds concurrently
- pet owner asking for advice on something that’s beyond SQP remit
- no appropriate course of action for animal that lies within SQP remit
- animal is at risk of deterioration of health
