what are the 9 protected characteristics under the equality act 2010?
- pregnancy and maternity

what is direct discrimination?
- when a person is treated less favourably than others due to having a protected characteristic
- e.g. person is “too young or too old”
what is indirect discrimination?
- rules or policies that puts you at a disadvantage
- e.g. an organisation that makes you work on a Sunday - Christians
what is discrimination by association?
if you are treated unfairly because someone you know has a protected characteristic
what is discrimination by perception?
you are treated unfairly because someone thinks you belong to a group with protected characteristics
what is harassment?
unwanted behaviour that makes you feel offended, humiliated or intimidated
what is victimisation?
when a person is treated badly because they complained about discrimination
what are reasonable adjustments?
you can ask for these when you start work i.e. accessible toilets, extra time, rails, ramps, quiet places
when should reasonable adjustments be put into place?
- if an employer becomes aware of a disability
- if someone asks for an adjustment to be made
- if an employee is having difficulty with any part of their job
what are philosophical beliefs?
- have to be genuinely held
- be worthy of respect
- isn’t incompatible with human dignity or rights
