what is the aim of the schedule 3 procedures legislation?
A
act defines who may practice veterinary surgery and sets out exemptions to this rule

what does the veterinary surgeons act define veterinary and medicine as?
A
- diagnosis of diseases in, and injuries to, animals including diagnostic tests
- giving advice based upon diagnosis
- medical and surgical treatment of animals
- performance of surgical operations on animals

what exemptions does schedule 3 permit?
A
- minor medical treatment to be given to the animal by the owner, household member or employee of the owner
- medical treatment or minor surgery (not entering body cavity) given to an animal used in agriculture by the owner
- first aid for the purpose of saving a life or relieving pain or suffering (by anyone)
over the age of 18; - castration of a male or the caponizing of an animal
- docking the tail of a lamb
-amputation of the dew claws of a dog before its eyes are open

what procedures are covered by schedule 3?
A
- minor surgery i.e. suturing wounds, non complex lump removal
- injections and cannula placement
- dental care: scaling and polishing
- monitoring patients under general anaesthetic

what are the conditions RVNs and SVNs have to follow under schedule 3 in order to be able to deliver medical treatment or minor surgery?
A
- the animal must be under the care of a vet and the treatment is carried out under their direction
- the vet is satisfied that the VN is qualified to carry out the treatment
- for SVNs, the treatment is supervised by a registered vet, vet practitioner or vet nurse and the supervision is direct, continuous and personal
