The pattern of psychological characteristics that make a person unique
What are the 3 personality theories?
- Trait theory
- Social learning theory
- Interactionalist theory
In trait theory what is personality determined by?
Inherited or genetically predetermined qualities
What are characteristics of trait theory?
- Traits are stable
- behaviour is predictable
What is an example of trait theory?
Some people are always aggressive
In the social learning theory what is personality determined by?
Copying the behaviour of others
What are characteristics of the social learning theory?
- Behaviour is learned from the environment
- Behaviour is predictable is the same situation reoccurs
What is an example of social learning theory?
A player may adopt a positive attitude in certain situations only
In the interactionalist theory what is personality determined by?
Behaviour chaning to the demands of the situation or environment
(Combination of trait and social learning factors)
What are characteristics of the interactionalist theory?
- Behaviour is unpredictable
- Respnses emerge from a combination of personality traits and the environment
What are the 2 types of trait theory?
- Extrovert/Introvert - Stable/Unstable
- Type A and B
What are characteristics of the extrovert personality type?
- Tend to be outgoing
- May be suited towards team sports
- Confident with other people
What are characteristics of the introvert personality type?
- Tend to have an inward focus
- May be suited towards individual sports
- May lack confidence in groups
What are the characteristics of a stable personality?
- Tend to have predictable temperment
- Suited to sports that require high performance
- Appear calm and relaxed
What are the characteristics of an unstable personality?
- Tend to have unpredictable temperment
- Not ideal for sports participation
- Prone to worry and high anxiety
