Sports Psychology - Goal Setting Flashcards
Give reasons why its important to set goals
- To improve focus
- To improve persistence on a task
- To raise confidence and self-efficacy
- To control arousal and anxiety
- To monitor performance
What are the different types of goal
Outcome goal
Performance goal
Process orientated goal
What is a outcome goal
Related to the end result e.g. winning the league
What is a performance goal
concerned with performance judged against other performances e.g. beating a PB
What is a process-orientated goal
concentrates on improvements in the performers’ technique or tactics - what they have to do to be more successful e.g. tuck tighter in a somersault to get a better rotation
What does SMART stand for
S - specific
M - measurable
A - achievable
R - recorded
T - time bound
Explain, using an example what the specific aspect of SMART means
Goals must be clear stating exactly what you want to achieve
e.g. I want to improve my speed in 100m by 0.3 seconds
Explain, using an example what the measurable aspect of SMART means
You must be able to assess improvements / progress towards the goal
e.g. you can measure improvements in 100m sprint by running 100m and timing how long it takes
Explain, using an example what the achievable aspect of SMART means
All interested parties have to have a common purpose and the goal must be realistic to the performer so it can actually be reached.
e.g. I want to run 5km in 29 mins in 6 weeks when I can currently run it in 30 mins
Explain, using an example what the recorded aspect of SMART means
You must write your progress down so you can monitor it
e.g. writing your score down each week in a diary
Explain, using an example what the time bound aspect of SMART means
You must set an end date to achieve your target by so help keep you motivated and focused
e.g. I want to achieve my goal in 6 weeks time
