Skill Acquisition - Guidance Flashcards
Identify the different types of guidance
Visual
Verbal
Manual
Mechanical
Describe and give an example of visual guidance
Visual guidance is where you can see a skill being performed
e.g. a coach demonstrates a tennis serve
Describe and give an example of verbal guidance
Verbal guidance is when a coach tells a performer step by step how to do a skill, or gives them advice on how to improve
e.g. a football coach tells the player to hit the ball with a different part of their foot when taking a free kick
Describe and give an example of manual guidance
Manual guidance is where a coach physically supports a performer through a skill
e.g. moving your arm to help with a forehand shot in tennis
Describe and give an example of mechanical guidance
The use of equipment to support a performer doing a skill
e.g. floats in swimming
Explain the advantages of visual guidance
- Visual guidance can be good for beginners because they can easily visualise the correct movement skill
- Its quick and effective
Explain the disadvantages of verbal guidance
- Verbal guidance can be given immediately and quickly, its good for fine tuning skills and developing movements
Explain the advantages of manual and mechanical guidance
- Reduces fear in dangerous situations
- Makes it safer for the performer
- Increase confidence
- Gather some sort of kinaesthetic feel of the movement
Explain the disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance
- Unrealistic feeling of the movement.
- Performer can become overly reliant on support
- Can be dangerous if manual guidance is weak or inappropriate, or the mechanical guidance manfluctions
