What is Sport Psychology?
Sports psychology is the study of the application of the mind, behaviour, mental states and processes.
What are some ways that sport psychology can improve performance?
Ways sport psychology can improve performance include:
- Increasing motivation
- Improving self-confidence
- Improving concentration levels
- Regulating arousal levels
- Decreasing stress and tension before, during and after competition.
What is and what are the 2 types of self-talk?
Self talk is about talking/thinking to yourself. Affects your future actions and feelings.
Types:
- Positive
- Negative
Positive Self-Talk
- Motivational
- Keeps athlete focus and confident
- Remind athelte about particular aspect of technique or tactic.
Negative Self-Talk
- In counter-productive, creates anxiety or self doubt.
- Self critical or demanding.
- Recalling past events when you’ve failed.
- Pessimistic about the situation.
What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic:
Comes form within you, e.g. Enjoyment, satisfaction of performance.
Extrinsic: External sources such as a medal, prize money, publicity, the praise or acknowledgement by the coach.
What is arousal?
Arousal can be thought of as the amount of ‘readiness’ a person experiences when faced with a task.
What is the relationship between arousal and performance?
Relationship between arousal and performance takes the form of an inverted ‘U’. As arousal increases so does performance, up to optimal point when best performance results. Over-arousal causes performance to decline.
What are some relaxation techniques?
3 types:
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Meditation
Self-Hypnosis
Describe Imagery. What are the categories?
The process of using all of the senses to create a picture of your performance in your mind.
5 types:
1.Motivational Specific
2.Motivation general-mastery
3.Motivation general-arousal
4.Cognitive-specific
5.Cognitive-general
What is the difference between internal and external imagery?
Internal: Imagining the execution of a skill from within your own body.
External: Viewing yourself as an observer, as if your watching a video.
