What is the aetiology of spondylolysis?
Fatigue fracture from REPITITIVE HYPEREXTENSION
What is imaging identifies it?
xray- 80% identification of lesion
another 15% seen on oblique radiographs
= DEFECT IN THE NECK OF THE SCOTTIE DOG
Is CT used to identify the spondylolysis?
yes or SINGLE PHOTON EMISSION COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (SPECT)
MORE UPTAKE on SPECT - ACUTE LESIONS that have potential to heal
What is the tx of spondylolysis?
Aimed at symptomatic relief rather than fracture healing if no spondylolithesis ACTIVITY RESTRICTION FLEXION EXERCISES BRACING NON UNION- is common
What is the prognosis of spondylolysis?
UNILATERAL DEFECTS ALMOST NEVER PROGRESS TO OLISTHESIS ( lumbar spine instability and slippage)
