What are some causes of massive splenomegaly?
A
- Myelofibrosis
- Chronic myeloid leukaemia
- Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)
- Malaria
- Gaucher’s syndrome - genetic disease - fat accumulates in organs.

What are some other causes of splenomegaly?
A
- Portal hypertension e.g. secondary to cirrhosis
- Lymphoproliferative disease e.g. CLL, Hodgkin’s
- Haemolytic anaemia
- Infection: hepatitis, EBV
- Infective endocarditis
- Sickle-cell (yes but NO)
- Thalassaemia
- Rheumatoid arthritis (Felty’s syndrome)

Even though it says that sicle-cell can cause splenomegaly, what do the majority of them have?
A
An atrophied spleen due to repeated infarctions.
