What are some causes of massive splenomegaly?

A
  • Myelofibrosis
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia
  • Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)
  • Malaria
  • Gaucher’s syndrome - genetic disease - fat accumulates in organs.

What are some other causes of splenomegaly?

A
  • Portal hypertension e.g. secondary to cirrhosis
  • Lymphoproliferative disease e.g. CLL, Hodgkin’s
  • Haemolytic anaemia
  • Infection: hepatitis, EBV
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Sickle-cell (yes but NO)
  • Thalassaemia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (Felty’s syndrome)

Even though it says that sicle-cell can cause splenomegaly, what do the majority of them have?

A

An atrophied spleen due to repeated infarctions.
