What gender is autoimmune hepatitis more commonly seen in?

What are some features of autoimmune hepatitis?
A
- Amenorrhoea (common)May present with signs of chronic liver disease
- Acute hepatitis: fever, jaundice etc (only 25% present in this way)

What autoantibodies and Ig can you test for that might be positive?
A
- ANA
- SMA (Anti-smooth muscle antibody)
- LKM1
- Raised IgG levels

To diagnose, a liver biopsy is often needed. What can be seen on biopsy?
A
Liver biopsy: inflammation extending beyond limiting plate ‘piecemeal necrosis’, bridging necrosis

Describe the 3 different types of autoimmune hepatitis.
A
Type 1 - ANA +/- SMA will be present. Affects child and adults.
Type 2 - LKM1 antibodies -affects children only
Type 3 - Soluble liver kidney antigen. Affects middle aged adults.

How is autoimmune hepatitis managed?
A
- Steroids
- Immunosuppresants.
- Liver transplanation
