Speech Acquisition Flashcards
What happens to children in the womb?
Learn to differentiate their mothers voice from other voices.
Learn to differentiate their mother’s language from other languages.
What happens to children’s cries at birth?
Contours are similar to prosody of their native language
What happens to children’s oromusculature/ cognitive development after birth?
Coos turn to babbles
Babbles to spoken word
By 5 they can produce most consonants and vowels
What four factors affect typical speech acquisition 1 between children?
Age
•Sex
•Socioeconomic status
•Language abilit
How does sex affect typical speech acquisition1 ?
Some research suggests that girls acqure speech earlier than boys (though some research disagrees).
How does socioeconomic status affect typical speech acquisition1?
Some research suggests children from higher SE backgrounds acquire speech earlier (though some research disagrees).
How does language ability affect typical speech acquisition 1?
Speech and language skills are interlinked. Generally children with typical language skills have typical speech skills.
What are the two factors affecting typical 2?
Pragmatic factors
Personal factors
How does pragmatic factors affect speech acquisition 2?
Child may avoid words or sounds as they have been noted to be hard to understand
How does personal factors affect typical speech acquisition 2? ( within child)
Performance may be affected by time of the day they are tested, hunger, tiredness, boredom, anxiety.
What three factors affect speech acquisition 3? ( phonetic, phonological and lexical factors)
Word frequency Vocabulary size Phonotactics Phonetic complexity Functional load
How does word frequency affect typical speech acquisition?
High frequency words have been found to be more accurate during speech acquisition, and better to target during intervention.
How does vocabulary size affect typical speech acquisition?
Some studies note that children with delayed babbling have smaller vocabularies. Early speech production may trigger word learning.
How does phonotactics affect typical speech acquisition?
The longer the word the more likely children will have production errors. Complex syllables (consonant clusters) also more likely to have errors.
How does phonetic complexity affect typical speech acquisition?
How difficult a sound is to articulate.
Early emerging consonants are less complex (e.g. /p, m, n, w, h/)
