SP8b Electromagnetism Flashcards
What can a current create?
a magnetic effect.
How can you identify the direction of a field of a straight wire using your right hand?
point your thumb in the direction of the conventional current, the field goes in the same direction of your fingers.
What does the strength of a magnetic field depend upon?
.the size of the current - the higher the current, the stronger the field
.the distance from the wire (how close field lines are to each other) - the closer to the wire, the stronger the field
What are field lines like inside a solenoid?
.close together
.virtually straight
.representing a strong, uniform magnetic field
What is an electromagnet?
a coil of wire with a soft iron core with a current flowing through it.
When does an iron core become a temporary magnet?
while a field from an electromagnet is affecting it.
How can we increase the strength of a filed?
.increase the current
.increase the length of the wire (number of turns)
What are field lines like outside a solenoid?
.form continuous loops, where direction of the fields lines depends on the direction of the current flowing through the solenoid.
What does the direction of the field outside of a solenoud depend upon?
the direction of the electric current flowing through the wire.
