SP3j Using electromagnetic waves and their dangers Flashcards
What are radiowaves used for? (1)
.communications
What are microwaves used for? (2)
.cooking
.communication + satellite transmission
What are infrared waves used for? (4)
.communication in short distances
.remote controls
.security systems
.heating food
What are ultra violet waves used for? (2)
.disinfect water by killing micro-organism in it
.check fake bank notes (bank notes are fluorescent, this means when ultraviolet light shines on them they react producing an image which are eyes can see)
What are x-rays used for? (2)
.in hospital to look at bones/inside your body
.in security scanners
What are gamma rays used for? (2)
.sterilisation of medical equipment (killing potentially harmful micro-organisms)
.in treatments of cancer cells (radiotherapy)
What are electromagnetic waves produced by and how?
changes in the atom - atoms absorb energy, cauing electrons to jump to higher energy levels. When they drop back to their original level they emit electromagnetic waves.
Effect of microwaves on the body.
cause internal heating of body tissue.
Effect of infrared waves on the body.
radiation is felt as heat and causes skin to burn.
Effect of x-rays on the body.
damage cells causing mutations (which may lead to cancer) and cell death.
Effect of gamma rays on the body.
damage cells causing cell mutations and cell death.
