what causes mononucleosis
epstein barr virus
what signs is mononucleosis associated with
cervical lymphadenopathy
hepatosplenomegaly
jaundice
how do you diagnose mononucleosis
FBC shows lymphocytosis and atypical lymphocytosis
deranged LFTs
EBV serology shows acute infection
monospot shows positive heterophile antibodies
paul bunnel test
what is the treatment for mononucleosis
supportive
systemic steroids if failing to improve
side effect in amoxicillin/ampicillin in EBV
how does epiglottitis present
severe sore throat, drooling saliva, pyrexia
may have stridor
what is seen on oral exam in epiglottitis
nothing - no inflammation of the tonsils
is epiglottitis serious
life threatening if not treated
what usually causes epiglottitis
haemophilus influenza type B
what is the treatment for epiglottitis
mild:
- supportive
- antibiotics
- nebulisers (adrenaline/saline)
- corticosteroids
more severe
- antibiotics
- intubation and ventilation
- tracheostomy
