reduced opening of the jaw (can be caused by salivary gland swelling)

IV fluids
drainage
what is the role of US in hand a neck lumps
shows type, lobulation, acts as guide for FNA, shows lymph nodes
what is the role a CT in h and n lumps
shows extent
CT chest, adenoid cystic cancer, detects bony erosion or destruction, highly sensitive to pulmonary mets
what is the role of an MRI in head and neck lumps
shows deep lobes, assesses local spread and nodes, evaluates perinueral spread, marrow involvement
what is the role of a PET in a head and neck lumps
metastatic nodes
in parotid swellings what else should you ask in a history
facial weakness, previous skin cancer, dry mouth, rheumatoid
what is an MRI contraindicated in
pacemaker, aneurysm clips
what are the features of suspicious of malignancy
solid nodule esp cystic irregular or microlobuated margins internal vascularity interval increase in size micro calcification marked hypoechogenicity metastatic lymphadenopathy
