pseudomonas, proteus sp. staph aureus
aspergillus niger, candida albicans
what is the treatment for eczematous otitis externa
a steroid without antibiotic
what is the management for otitis externa
keep water out
avoid trauma (cotton buds)
keep hearing aids out
antibiotic drops
if cellulitis may need systemic antibiotics aswell
what ear drops can be used as wax solvents
sodium bicarb
olive oil
almond oil
what should be done if there is an insect in a patient ear
drown it in oil then get it out
how do you administer ear drops
ear upwards (lying down)
straight ear canal (adults- pull pinna upwards and backwards. children straight backwards)
press tragus
wick may be helpful if the ear is very oedematous
what are the side effects of ear drops
dizziness
local sensitivity
ototoxicity (aminoglycoside antibiotics)
why do ear drops cause dizziness
if not same temp as nody
stimulates lateral SCC
