A

1) Him and other moderates blocked conservatives in council

5) Act of Uniformity 1549 - Only English used in services and bread and wine which goes directly against catholics.

2 was logical after disolution and raised money for war.

Explain costly war?

A

Francis I died in 1547
Henry II renewed scottish alliance+sent 4000 troops.
Somerset took 16,000 troops and 4000 cavalry and won Battle of Pinkie.
1548 - Mary sent to France to marry Francis II (Heir)

Financed this with further debasing coin - Raised £537,000

Fallout of Pinkie?

A

Somerset pulled out in 1549 to secure regency and protcect southern coast.
Cost £600,000 and all that happened was MQS set to become French Q.
DISASTER!!! = INVASION THREAT

Sold monestic land to help finance but reduced crowns security as nobles stronger + crown weaker.

A

Enclosures caused hardship
Inflation form debasement

Actions for economy?

A

Enclosures commision but left poor and rich annoyed. Rich didnt want as would affect money and poor expected help but gov couldnt without rich landowners to enforce.
Laws increased tax on sheep and coth in 1548-49 meant high prices = soicial unrest = rebellions.

A

Both rebellions and scotland showed poor leadership and desicion making.
Moved Edward to Windsor Castle as essentially a hostage.
Arrested + imprisoned by council in 1549.
Northumberland emerges as Leader after struggle for power.
