Mary Foreign Policy Flashcards
What happened overall during Mary I?
Engaged in new wars - destroyed peace.
Economic - still in debt/poor economy
Set up Elizabeth for failure.
What was the underpinning cause of the failure?
Her marriage to Charles V. Couldnt stay neutral in franco-spanish conflict.
Had potential if they had an heir but annoyed charles as it was for nothing. (Armarda)
Why was it a failure??
No heir produced.
Paul IV was elected in 1555 and pushed anti-spanish hate. Meant Mary was essenstially at war with the papacy.
In 1554 Charles took control of the netherlands. Then he passed control to Phillip in 1556.
What started the war?
1557 Scarborough Raid - nothing serious, easily defeated but would have happened eventually due to allience with Spain.
How did war go and consequences?
Decently at start but lost Calais in January 1558. Held by English for over 2 centuries. VERY BAD, especially for the first female English monarch. Showed weakness in strength and judegment and reduced already weak economy.
FP summed up?
Marriage only in name + no heir.
Lost key trading, strategic port.
Poor relationship with Pope.
Broke treaties for no gain and overall really terrible.
