AKA Munchausen syndrome
- more common among medically knowledgeable people
conversion disorder
condition where people show psychological stress in physical ways
- starts as mental/emotional crisis and converts into physical problem
conversion disorder prevalence
- twice as common in women
- typically appears suddenly at times of stress
somatic symptom disorder
excessively distressed and anxious about bodily symptoms
- symptoms last longer than conversion disorder but not as severe
somatization pattern
ailments without physical basis
- most common in women, runs in families
predominant pain pattern
primary symptom is pain
- source of pain is known or unknown but symptoms/disruption are out of proportion
Hysterical disorders
old name of conversion disorder and somatic symptom disorders
illness anxiety disorder
preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness
- performs excessive health related behaviors or exhibits maladaptive avoidance
- present for at least 6 months
- CBT can help
affecting other medical conditions
physical illnesses caused or worsened by an interaction of bio psychosocial factors
- stress affects biological functioning
