set of unique expressed characteristics or traits that cause us to act in predictable ways throughout our lives
disorders
- 9-13% of adults have one
- common for person with personality disorders to experience other comorbidity
- among most difficult disorders to treat
3 clusters
- odd/eccentric
- dramatic, emotional or erratic behavior
- anxious or fearful behavior
Odd personality disorders
- paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal
- display symptoms somewhat similar to schizophrenia but not as extensive
paranoid personality disorder
deep distrust and suspicion of others
schizoid personality disorder
persistent avoidance of social relationships, limited emotional expression
schizotypal personality disorder
range of interpersonal problems, including extreme discomfort in close relationships, odd/bizarre ways of thinking, behavioral eccentricities
dramatic personality disorders
- histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, borderline
- difficulty in relationships is one of the bigger problems, due to dramatic, emotional or erratic behaviors
Histrionic personality disorder
- believed to be more common in women than men, but partially due to gender bias in diagnosis
- likely to seek out treatment, but therapy doesn’t likely work
narcissistic personality disorder
grandiosity, a need for admiration, lack of empathy, and exaggeration of achievements and talents
antisocial personality disorder
- persistent disregard for others rights, lack of conscience, lack of empathy
- must be 18 year of age to be diagnosed, usually comes with misbehaviors before 18 years old
- 4 times more coming in men than women
- precursors are conduct or oppositional deficient disorders in kids
borderline personality disorder
- highly emotional and dramatic - very sensitive, quick to react, slow to calm down
- comorbid with eating disorders
- 3 times as common in women
anxious personality disorders
- avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive
- behavior is anxious and fearful, resulting in interpersonal consequences
avoidant personality disorder
- uncomfortable and inhibited in social situations, overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, extremely sensitive to negative evaluation
dependent personality disorder
- pervasive, excessive need to be taken care of
