Generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder

most common mental disorder, 18% of adults in any given year, 1/5 seek treatment
Generalized anxiety disorder
excessive anxiety and worry in most circumstances, “free-floating” anxiety
- has to occur for more days than not for at least 3 months
phobia
persistent, unreasonable fear for particular objects, activities or situations
- specific, social or agoraphobia
specific phobia
women outnumber men at least 2:1
- most people don’t seek treatment

flooding, forced non-gradual exposure
agoraphobia
fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult should they experience panic, always triggered by traumatic event
- often comorbid with panic disorder
Social anxiety disorder
fear/anxiety about tone of more socials intuitions in which individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others
-people hold beliefs that consistently work against them
panic disorder
when panic attacks happen repeatedly, unexpectedly and without apparent reason
- 80% of people treated with cognitive therapy are panic free for 2 years
OCD
cycle of obsessions and compulsions
- most common theme is dirt/contamination for obsessions
- medication plus CBT may be the best
OCD related disorders
hoarding, hair-pulling, skin-picking, body dysmorphic disorder
