mood disorders
include depression and mania
depression
low, sad state in which life seems dark and challenges overwhelming
- 8% of adults in a given year
mania
state of breathless euphoria or frenzied energy
- dramatic inappropriate rises in mood
major depressive episode
5 or more symptoms of depression for at least 2 weeks
- can also be categorized as seasonal, peripartum, catatonic, melancholic, with psychotic features
major depressive disorder
one or more MDE with no history or mania
persistent depressive disorder
depression for 2 years or more
premenstrual dysphoric disorder
depression symptoms nearly every month, only in the week before menstruation
Bipolar
mixed depression and mania, bipolar I more common than bipolar II
manic episode
one week or more period of abnormally, persistently elevated or irritable mood and abnormally, persistently increase activity or energy for most of day nearly every day
bipolar I
full manic and major depressive episodes
bipolar II
hypomanic episodes alternate with major depressive episodes, no manic episodes
rapid cycling
4 or more episodes in a one year period
cyclothymic disorder
depressive symptoms and hypomania but no manic or major depressive episodes, lasting for 2+ years
