Anorexia Nervosa
restriction oof energy intake relative to what is needed, resulting in significantly low body weight
- 90-95% cases in females
- age of onset is typically 14-18 years old
- driving motivation is fear of obesity, giving in to desire to eat, losing control
Bulimia Nervosa
recurrent episodes of binge eating
- occurs at least once a week for three months
- 90-95% females
- age of onset 15-21 years old
- more than 1/3 of people with bulimia have BPD
Differences
- bulimia has loss of tooth enamel and dentin
- bulimia tend to be more sexually experienced and active
- bulimia suffer damage caused by purging
binge eating disorder
not driven to thinness
- recurrent episodes of binge eating
- once a week for three months
Causes
societal pressures
- certain subcultures at higher risk
biological factors: relatives of those with eating disorders are 6 times more likely to develop an eating disorder themselves
treatment
number one goal is to restore normal weight
