solutions: chemistry Flashcards
saturated solution
is a solution with an undissolved solute
unsaturated solution
a solution in which more solute can be dissolved
supersaturated solution
can be made by dissolving the solute under high temps and then carefully cooling them. these are unstable solutions
solutions
a homogenous(alike) mixture of two or more substances in a single phase of matter
colloids
particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and suspensions
suspensions
is a heterogenous mixture and can be so large that it can settle out unless this mixture is constantly stirred or agitated
factors that can affect solubility
- nature of both solvents and solutes
- temperatures
- for gases: the pressure
factors of solubility example
sucrose being dissolved in hot water than cold, which makes rock candy. the solubility when using hot water increases the temp of the solution making the rock candy because it allows the sugar to crystalize(supersaturated solution)
solvent
dissolving medium (something that helps something dissolve)
solute
substance dissolved
solvent and solute example
dissolving salt in water
solvent and solute example explanation
the salt is being dissolved in the water making it the solute(the substance dissolved) and the water the solvent(dissolving medium; helping salt dissolve)
