blood Flashcards
the average adult has how many pints of blood?
8-10 pints
functions of the blood:
transport, regulation, protection
blood composition
plasma
rbc’s (red blood cells)
wbc’s(white blood cells)
platelets
water is what percent of the total volume of plasma
92%
what are the three plasma proteins?
fibrinogen, albumin, globulin
what is hematopoiesis?
the formation of all blood cells
what is oxyhemoglobin?
oxygenated blood cells
what is carboxyhemoglobin?
deoxygenated blood cells
what are neutrophils?
phagocytize bacteria
what is the normal range of clotting time?
5 to 15 minutes
what are the different types of blood?
A, B, AB, O
what is anemia
a red blood cell disorder in which you lack enough healthy rbc’s to carry enough oxygen to your body’s tissues
what is iron deficiency anemia
not enough iron to the point where your body cant produce enough hemoglobin in the blood to carry out oxygen
what is aplastic anemia
when your body stops producing new blood cells. leaves uncontrolled bleeding
sickle cell anemia
the red blood cells shape is altered which can slow or block blood flow
cooley’s anemia
inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin (stuff that allows rbc’s to carry out oxygen) than normal
pernicious anemia
a lack of healthy red blood cells caused by lower than usual amounts of vitamin b-12 and folate
polycythemia
type of blood cancer that causes your bone marrow to make too many rbc’s resulting in thicker flow of blood which may slow down or even stop its flow
embolism
blood clot(or clots) that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung. most cases the blood clot forms in a deep vein in the leg and travels to the lung
thrombosis
when a blood clot forms in one more of the blood vessels
hematoma
collection of blood in the skull and is usually caused by a blood vessel burst in the brain
hemophilia
blood doesnt clot in the typical way due to the lack of clotting factors(proteins)
thrombocytopenia
a condition which you have a low blood platelet (colorless blood cells that help blood clot) count
leukemia
bone marrow creates too many white blood cells(cells that help fight off infection) causing them to not function properly
multiple myeloma
cancer that forms in the wbc’s plasma cells. instead of producing helpful antibodies in the bone marrow the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause complications
septicemia
when an infection enters the bodies bloodstream which can cause drop in blood pressure
