solubility (4-5) (paper 2) Flashcards
1
Q
what is solubility often measured in
A
grams of solute per 100g of solvent
2
Q
what is solubility
A
the measure of how much solute will dissolve in a solvent
3
Q
what can you do to increase the solubility of a solute
A
increase the temperature
4
Q
what is the name given to the graph that compares solubility to temperature
A
solubility curves
5
Q
what practicle can you do to investigate how temperature affects solubility
A
- make a saturated solution by adding ammonium chloride to water at an excess
- stir and place in water bath
- check after 5 mins that all excess has sunk and it is 25C
- weigh empty evepourating basin
- pour some solution (not the excess) in basin
- re-weight basin
- heat gently
- once evapourated weight pure ammonium chloride
- repeat at different temperatures and plot graph
6
Q
what is the equation to calucates soolubitity form the masses of the solid and water
A
solubility = (mass of solid (g) / mass of water removed (g)) x 100
