Q

Why are inorganic rock particles important to living organisms?

A

They form the soil skeleton (ouu Halloween is coming up hehe) it provides support and anchorage for plant roots.
Provide shelter for soil animals
And provide a surface for attachment of soil microorganisms.

Q

Why is water important?(3)

A
  • It is essential for photosynthesis
  • It dissolves mineral salts for absorption by plant roots.
  • It prevents desiccation (having all the moisture removed) of organisms without a water-proof body covering (like the tiny or big earthworms, they really come in all sizes)

Q

What is humus made from?

A

dead and decaying organic matter

17
Q

Describe humus

A

A dark brown sticky material

18
Q

What does humus do? and where is it mainly found?

A

It forms a coating around soil particles, mainly in topsoil. It adds minerals to soils.

19
Q

What are soil crumbs?

A

Soil particles that are bound together in small groups by humus

20
Q

A soil with a good crumb structure has good…?

A
  • Good Drainage
  • Is well aerated
  • is workable due to fairly large air spaces between crumbs
21
Q

What else does humus do? (4)

A
  • Absorbs and retains water
  • Absorbs and retains mineral salts
  • Helps insulate soil against extremes of heat or cold
  • Helps prevent erosion by binding soil particles together.
22
Q

List some soil organisms- (7)

A

Bacteria, fungi, worms, insects, burrowing animals, plant roots

23
Q

What is soil?

A

The top layer of the earth’s surface

24
Q

What is soil a complex mixture of? (4)

A

Minerals, water, air and organic matter

the decaying remains of one’s living things
