Q

What does decomposition mean?

A

It means to break down basically. decomposition is a metabolic process, taking up raw materials in the form of complex compounds, processing it and then converting it into simpler compounds, which then creates nutrients for primary producers. like plants

Q

Name two of the main decomposers (there’s only 2 btw)

A

The main groups of decomposer organisms are bacteria and fungi! They’re saprophytes/ saprotrophs

Q

What are decomposers?

A

Organisms that break down DOM into smaller, simple, soluble substances. Secrete digestive enzymes onto DOM. The nutrients from these remains are then absorbed by the decomposers. (dom- dead organic matter)

Q

What are decomposers? definition 2

A

They both cause decay by releasing enzymes that break down compounds in their food so it can be absorbed by their cells. Organisms that feed on dead material in this way are called saprophytes.

Q

What are the characteristics of a decomposer?

A

1) They’re microscopic
2) they don’t ingest dead organic matter
3) they secrete enzymes on to the dead organic matter therefore the digestion is external.
4) They rely on DOM as a source of food and energy
5) They breakdown complex organic nutrients into small, simple, soluble materials

Q

What are the characteristics of a detritivore?

A

1) Larger- invertebrates and crustaceans
2) Their digestion is internal
3) Rely on DOM as a source of food and energy
4) They just break it down into smaller fragments
5) They do ingest dead organic matter

Q

What are the functions of decomposers on our planet?

A

break down dom into substances that plants need to grow, therefore (making nutrients) they are recycling and they contribute to natural cycles (carbon/ nitrogen cycles)
PLUS they prevent the gathering of dead matter and without them, our earth would be a big pile of dead bodies and smelly stuff, which then makes infections etc. so yes they ARE THAT IMPORTANT

Q

What is the difference between a detritivore and a decomposer

A

Detritivores are organisms that feed on the organic waste of dead plants and animals while decomposers are the organisms that decompose dead plants and animals.
