What does HIV stand for?
human immunodeficiency virus (not a disease)
What does AIDS stand for?
acquired immune deficiency syndrome
AIDS definition
can develop as a result of HIV infection. All persons with AIDS are HIV positive
HIV definition
Attacks cells that fight infection n the body, there is no cure but it can be treated.
Where does HIV live?
it lives only within living cells and the body fluids but not outside the body
How can it be transmitted?
unprotected vaginal/anal intercourse.
direct exposure to infected blood like infected needles.
mother to a child
it isn’t spread through touch or saliva contact
What are the three HIV tests?
nucleic acid tests(NAT) anitigen/antibody tests
How is HIV tests performed?
blood/oral fluids, sometimes urine
what is a nat test
looks for the actual virus in the blood
how long does it take to tell if u have hiv from a NAT test
10-33 days
What is an antigen/antibody test? And how long does it take to tell?
Looks for both HIV antigens and antibodies. 18-90 days
What is antibody tests?
Only looks for HIV antigens in body fluid or blood
How long does it take in antibody tests
23-90 days
