24-02 HAZMAT INCIDENTS
Upon recognition of signs of a hazmat incident what shall personnel do?(3)
- leave the immediate area
- initiate a hazmat response
- conduct a hazard/risk analysis if there is potential for victims

What should be considered when apparatus approach and place themselves? (6)
- up wind, up hill
- approach from different directions to provide flexibility
- apparatus should be beyond evacuation distance
- shall be off the property in such a manner as to restrict the access of vehicles onto the property
- fire control shall direct company reps to bring any necessary info and meet first in apparatus
- all responding outside agencies will be directed to the warm zone

What are the responsibilities of first responding apparatus?(11)
- determine the hot, warm and cold zone
- control entry/exit of hot and warm zone
- gather information
- utilize the expertise of on-scene personnel
- protect on-scene personnel and civilians by isolating and evacuating
- determine possible rescue situations
- if hazmat team is not on scene establish a decontamination area using a charged 38 and personnel in full PPE
- request assistance beyond usual scope if required
- first arriving officer shall undertake the responsibilities of the hazmat sector officer
- relay pertinent information
- assist hazmat team after their arrival

When first responding units are gathering information what questions should be asked?(3)

What are the responsibilities of the IC?(11)
- designate an HSO
- Ensure emergency decon is set up when operations are conducted before hazmat team arrives
- ensure entry control/accountability is established
- confer with HSO regarding needs and requirements
- Reference the ERG for evacuations distances
- consult with police on evacuation plan
- set up isolation procedures if required
- decide to what extent fire personnel will assist in the clean up
- transfer responsibility to competent agency prior to leaving
- ensure all waste products are disposed of
- prepare a post incident analysis to be forwarded to the division chief of training and fire administration for incidents that require the donning of chemical suits

When leaving the scene who might be considered a competent agency?(3)
- Peel spill control

What are the responsibilities of the Hazmat Sector Officer?(10)
- consult with the IC to determine the actions required
- advise the IC if protect in place should be considered
- adjust hot, warm and cold zones if needed

- ID all the involved hazardous materials
- determine level of PPE
- frequently advise the IC of conditions and operations in the hot zone
- determine decontamination level
- ensure proper operation of the decontamination area
