Mobilisation of tissue- skin and subcutaneous tissue, contractile and non contractile tissue
Movement of fluid- oedema, lymph, blood, mucus
What are the physiological effects of massage
Circulatory system- venous and lymphatic flow, skin reddening
MSK system- muscle, tissue, connective tissues
Nervous system- pain relied, autonomic response
What are the effects of a weekly massage
Increased circulating lymphocyte markers, decreased cytokine production
What are the psychological effects of massage
Reduced anxiety, reduced muscle tension, reduced pain perception, raised mood, improved relaxation
Indications for use of massage
Soft tissue damage , oedema, venous return, ulcers, pain
Contra indications of massage
Open wound, compromised circulation, haemorrhage, early bruising, early stages of healing, bacterial or fungal infection, acute inflammation am active bone growth, skin conditions, undiagnosed cancer, DVT, malignancy
Potential contraindications
Malignant disease, fragile skin, steroid use, diabetes, RA, heart problems, surgery
