What is Socialization?
It is learning the norms and rules of society.
It occurs throughout our lives but the most important one is in childhood.
What is World-view?
It is one’s expectations of how the world works, emphasizing perception and experience.
Eg: sleepy boy in St Vincent church,
taxi drivers in LA and Santa Monica
What is Enculturation?
It is childhood socialization. The most important element is mimicry.
What is Child-rearing? Examples?
It is techniques of raising children. Eg: Weaning, violence, independence training, dependence training
What is Weaning?
It is stopping breast feeding.
In society that wean earlier, the child is less confident and takes longer to socialize.
What can we say about Violence in child rearing?
Societies that have warfare encourage violence in children.
What is Independence training?
It is learning to rely on oneself.
What is Dependence training?
It is learning to rely on others.
What can we say about Independence and Dependence training?
Everybody needs both but societies have different emphasis.
Independence training is emphasized in society with simple division of labor.
Dependence training is emphasized in society with complex division of labor.
What are Core-values?
They are values especially promoted by a society.
What is culture-bound syndrome or culture specific syndrome?
It is mental illness found only in a specific culture (only when it’s recognized by the people in that culture and is given a name). It is related to core-value.
Eg: “mok” in Malaysia for men
“lata” in Indonesia for hyper startling of women in 50-6- years old
