What is Art?
It is creative expression judged by aesthetic principles
What is Visual Arts?
It is arts where the image is judged.
eg: painting, photograph, sculpture
What is Oral Arts?
It is arts where the words are judged
eg: tongue twister, jokes, myth…etc
What is Music?
It is arts where pattern of sound is judged
What is Dance?
It is arts where the pattern of movement is judged
What is Myth?
It is a traditional story that is believed to be true that explains the origin of things and occurs in mythic time
eg: Noah ark; St Vincent’s myth about the origin of white people
What is the function of Myth?
Enforcing world-view, part of socialization
eg: “Daughters of Copper woman”
What is Legend?
It is a traditional story that is believed to be true and that occurs in historical time but it’s difficult to verity.
eg: Legends about George Washington
What is Tale?
It is a traditional story that is not believed to be true, does not occur in historical time and it’s used primarily for education and entertainment.
eg: “Once upon a time”
What is the function of Tale?
It is to reinforce the norms by pointing out the opposite
eg: “Princes and the pea”
What is Joke?
It is a short story with an incongruous ending.
aka: what is expected to follow does not follow. It’s the main thing that people laugh at.
One has to know the norms for the joke to be funny.
The less material wealth the more elaborate oral arts.
What is the function and structure of a joke?
It is to promote social solidarity and to reinforce the norms.
Two parts:
- Establishing the norm (set up)
- Violate the norm (punch line)
What is Riddle?
It is the puzzle in word form.
One cannot know the answer unless one already knows the answer.
It can be visual and can be very close to jokes.
No one has been able to explain why riddles exist.
What is Proverb?
It í compact saying with a message.
