psychological defined groups
- two or more people who interact with and influence each other for more than a few minutes
- group members don’t have to like each other
- you can be part of a group without choice
roles of groups
- leadership: leaders in groups emerge rather then being assigned
- norms: expected behaviours and rules
- group cohesion: meeting frequently and sitting together as a group

social norms
social roles- roles taken for the benefit of the group
social status-some roles are more important then others
ingroup and outgroups attitudes
- more similar to members of the group
- superior to outgroup members
- all outgroups are similar to one another
social loafing
*practise of putting in less effort when in a group
this is because in a group people feel less accountable
and they feel there efforts are not as important
deindividuation
abandoning usual restraints to join in group behaviour is

- teacher told to shock them every wrong answer
- 26 out of 40 would shock the learner with the highest shock, even believing they were hurting someone
- not many partispiants refused to shock them

* most of the group were confederates worked for the experimenter
they were asked what stick was closet to the other stick
*there was 18 trials
* first two they all agreed on the correct answer
*75% agreed with confederates 1 trial
* 50% echoed the wrong answer
* quarter people stuck with what believed in
social conformity
when we change our behaviour in response to group pressure. we conform to group standards in order to be part of a group and be accepted.
unanimity
the agreement of everyone involved in a situation
