Social facilitation Flashcards
Define social facilitation and give an example
The audience has a positive effect/ improves performance - e.g. a hockey goal keeper plays better in front of a crowd
The audience could be a coach, spectators or other performers
Define social inhibition and give an example
The audience had a negative effect/ hinders performance - e.g. a gymnast performs badly when performing in front of others
The audience could be a coach, spectators or other performers
Define evaluation apprehension
Arousal levels increase due to perceived judgement by others
How does an audience effect a performer?
The presense of an audience will increase a performer’s level of arousal, this increases the liklihood of the dominant response being selected
The effect of the performer’s dominant response determines whether performance increases/ decreases
How does the presense of an audience effect an introvert?
An audience is likely to cause social inhibition
How does the presense of an audience effect an extrovert?
An audience is likely to cause social facilitation
How does an audience effect a performer in the cognative stage?
An audience is likely to have a negative effect (social inhibition), due to dominant response
How does an audience effect a performer in the autonomous stage?
An audience is likely to have a positive effect (social facilitaion), due to dominant response
How does an audience effect performance of a simple skill?
An audience is likely to have a positive effect (social facilitation), as simple skills are less affected by high levels of arousal
How does an audience effect the performance of a complex skill?
An audience is likely to have a negative effect (social inhibition), as complex skills are performed better with a low level of arousal
How does an audience effect the performance of a gross skill?
An audience is likely to have a positive effect (social facilitation), as gross skills benefit from a high level of arousal
How does an audience effect the performance of a fine skill?
An audience is likely to have a negative effect (social inhibiton), as fine skills are negatively effected by a high level of arousal
Give strategies to minimise social inhibition
- Use of selective attention/ imagery to “shut out” audience
- Train in front of a crowd to enable the performer to get used to it
- Groove skills to ensure that dominant response is the correct one
- Use of stress relief techniques to reduce/ control arousal
- Support from peers and coach to reassure performer (reduce anxiety)
Name other audience factors that effect performance
- Home field effect
- Proximity effect
- Size of the crowd
What is the home field effect?
- Performance may improve when playing infront of a home crowd
- Performance may decrease due to pressure of “not wanting to let home fans down”
