What is an emergent leader?
Give an example
A leader is selected from within the team/ by the team members
e.g. cricket team votes for new captain
What is a prescribed leader?
Give an example
A leader is selected from outside the team/ by a coach or manager
e.g. a new manager selecting the new captain of a hockey team
What are the benefits of an emergent leader?
- Readily accepted by the group
- Knows the players/ team dynamics
- Already proved themselves within the team
What are the benefits of an prescribed leader?
- Outside the group therefore impartial opinion
- No social influence
What are the three leadership styles?
- Autocratic
- Democratic
- Laissez-faire
What are the charecteristics of an autocratic leader?
- The leader makes all the decisions instead of the group
- Works quickly
- Has a clear pre-determined goal
- Task orientated/ wants to get task finished
- Focus is on the result/ goal, rather than the process
- Does not get involved with the group/ little personal interest in the group
- Dicatorial
- Command approach
When is an autocratic leadership style effective?
- Dangerous situations
- Time precious situations
- With begginers who lack experiance
- Young groups with low maturity
- Large groups
- Male groups
- Groups who prefer an autocratic leadership style
- When the leader’s preferred style is autocratic
What are the charecteristics of a democratic leader?
- Involves the group memebers in the task
- Shares decisions
- Delegates responsibility
- Works slower than an autocratic leader
- Person orientated, shows an interest in the group members/ gets to know the group members
- Happy to change the goal, depending on an individual’s preferances
- Gives group members ownership of the task to increase motivation
When is a democratic leadership style effective?
- With safe and simple tasks/ skills
- When there’s no time preasure
- With experts, who have experiance/ require less leadership
- Small groups
- Female groups
- With groups who prefer a democratic leadership style
What are the charecteristics of a laissez-faire leader?
- The leader takes a back seat
- The leader makes very few decisions
- The group makes the decisions/ can do as they wish
- The leader gives little feedback/ has little input
- The leader has a very limited direct influence
When is a laissez-faire leadership style effective?
- When the leader fully trusts the group/ elite performers
- When developing creativity
Describe the trait theory of leadership
- People are born with the charecteristics to be leaders/ leadership is innate - e.g. charisma/ confidence
- Leadership traits are stable and enduring
- Great leaders can lead in any situation
- Does not consider the effect of enviroment
Describe the social learning theory of leadership
- Leadership charecteristics are learned from others
- Leaderships is observed, copied, and reinforced
- More likely to occur if observing significant others
- Does not consider traits
Describe the interactionist theory of leadership?
People are born with the charecteristics to be leaders, but their enviroment nurtures these charecteristics
