Social exchange theory- Relationships (theories) Flashcards
Profit and loss A01
attempts to maximise rewards and minimise costs in starting and maintaining relationships. judge satisfaction in terms of profit and loss
examples of rewards in a relationship:
-sex
-laughter
-entertainment
-company
examples of costs in a relationship:
-effort
-not cost effective
-take into consideration their feelings
Comparison level a01
The CL is the amount of reward that you believe you deserve. This belief about what we deserve is based on previous experiences of relationships, which determine what we expect from our current relationship.someone with low self-esteem is likely to have a low CL and will therefore be satisfied with just a small profit
comparison level for alternatives AO1
-weigh up profit might get from a different partner compared to profit from being with current partner
4 stage model of relationship development AO1 (brief understanding)
-sampling stage: we explore the rewards and costs of social exchange by experimenting with them in our own relationships
-bargaining stage: beginning of relationship exchange costs and rewards,- leads to deeper relationship
-commitment stage: costs and rewards become more predictable
-institutionalisation: settle down bc of norms of relationship, know how to minimise costs
