Equity theory- Relationships (theories) Flashcards
what does the equity theory suggest?
distribution of rewards and costs in a relationship must be fair (equitable) for each to be satisfied
are rewards more important than costs?
there is a fair balance of rewards and costs for both partners
consequences of inequity
One partner under-benefits from the relationship – this partner is likely to feel the most dissatisfaction, in the form of anger, resentment, hostility, humiliation, etc.
One partner over-benefits – this partner is likely to feel guilt, discomfort and shame.
changes in perceived equity
may contribute more than receive at start of relationship but if continues eventually lead to dissatisfaction
dealing with inequity
Restore actual equity – one partner can try to set things right or urge their partner to do so.
Restore psychological equity – one partner can distort reality and convince themselves that things are fair just the way they are.
Leave the relationship – either physically or emotionally.
