Carbohydrates
Simple - fruit/veg, biscuits, cakes, chocolate and confectionary
Complex - wholemeal rice, pasta, bread, nuts and potatoes
Fats
Important because they provide energy and, together with glycogen, help muscles to work
Butter/margarine, nuts and cooking oils
Proteins
Muscle growth and repair
Animal - poultry, fish and dairy products such as cheese, milk and yoghurts.
Plant/veg - pulses (lentils, peas and beans)
Carbo-loading
Used to maximise glycogen in the muscles and liver
Protein intake
Power athletes use this to regulate the amount of protein taken in because they can only take in so much. Protein is a key part of diet
Dehydration
The loss of water and salts essential for normal body function
Hydration
Being hydrated means the body has the correct amount of water in cells, tissues and organs to function correctly
