Concussion
Contact to the head that may cause headaches, weakness or slurred speech that can occur through a heavy blow to the head during a football match going for a header and clashing heads. To prevent use protective equipment
Fractures
Broken or cracked bone that can occur when running and having to suddenly change direction. Can occur in football when studs are to the ankle. Wear ankle pads to prevent
Dislocation
A bone at a joint is forced out of position and is caused by a hard blow. Can occur when serving in tennis. Don’t overtrain to prevent
Sprain
Wrench or twisted ligament. Can occur when stretching or tearing a tissue. Mistiming a tackle in football. Be careful before going in for a tackle
Torn cartilage
When splitting the firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones, can occur by overusing when constantly running. Give yourself rests
Soft tissue injury
Where two bones meet but separate. When a ligament is torn, can occur in basketball when a player lands awkwardly. Be careful when landing
Strain
Twist, pull or tear of a muscle or tendon, can occur when a sprinter pulls his hamstring if he has not warmed up properly. Must warm up properly.
Abrasion
A cut or graze that can occur when falling on a rough surface. A footballer might fall on dry mud and cut his knee. Wear the correct equipment
