Methods of training on the gcse specification
Continuous
Fartlek
Circuit
Interval
Plyometric
Weight
Why is it essential that you fully understand the current levels of fitness
To avoid overtraining and potential injuries
Fartlek training
Interval training includs periods of work and rest
What are the main methods of training
Continuous, Fartlek, Circuit, Interval, Plyometric, Weight
What is the right method of training
-The requirements of the particular sport
-the facilities in the local area
-The individuals current level of fitness
Requirments of the particular sport
E.g a marathon runner would train hours a week to improve their fitness
What is continuous training?
Continuous training is steady training. There are no rest period and session normally last
longer than 15mins.
What are the positives of continuous training?
-it improves vardiovascular fitness
-you dont need money
-can be done alone or in a group
What are the negatives of continuous training?
-people find it boring
-does not imrpve anaerobic fitness
What is fartlek training
interval training it includes periods of work followed by periods of rest or light work.
What does fartlek mean
Fartlek training originated in Sweden. The word
‘fartlek’ is a combination of the two Swedish works for
‘speed’ and ’play’.
What are the posotives of fartlek training
-Can be done on different varietys of terrain
-can include rest periods or be continuous
What are the negatives of fartlek training
-there may not be a suitable terrain nearby
-difficult for the coach to moniter unless he is running with an athlete
What is circuit training
Circuit training involves a number of exercises arranged so as to avoid exercising the same muscle groups consecutively
What are the positives of circuit training
-Can combine many components of training
-a good source of all round fitness
What are the negatives of circuit training
-the circuit needs to be set up and well planned out
-it is important to work hard on each circuit
What is interval training
The aim of interval training is to have a high-intensity, high-quality workout always done at a fast pace
What are the postives of interval training
-includes repeated sprints so its anaerobic
-include a rest period
What are the negatives of interval training
-can be intense so it needs full commitment
-some pep
What are the negatives of interval training
-can be intense so it needs full commitment
-some people find it boring
What is Plymotrics
Plyometrics are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time
What are the positives of plymetrics
-improves explosive fitness
-exercises can be designed for specific performances
What are the negatives of plymetrics
-need knowledge of your event or coach
-need to progress gradually, rest and recovery is important
What is weight training
Weight training uses progressive resistance either in the form of actual weight lifted or in terms of the number of times the weight is lifted
What are the negatives of weight training
-used to improve strength, muscular endurance or power
-easy to moniter
What are the negatives of weight training
-needs suitable facilities and equipment
-need knowledge of safety and technique
