Soc 10 Flashcards
What is a sprain injury
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport
is a twisted or overstretched ankle.
What are the symptons of a sprain
Swelling
Soft tissue injury
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particularly prone injury because movement outside of their normal range.
Strains
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon.
How do you get a strain?
Tendons are inflamed due to overuse, causing pain on the outside of the elbow.
Torn cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones.
How do you get a torn cartilage?
due to wear and tear from long-term overuse. They are tears at the joint
Dislocations
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position.
Symptons of disclocation
deformity and swelling of the joint, which is locked out of position.
Abrasions
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface
Concussion
An impact to the head causes unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss.
How do you get concussion
Normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports.
Warming up
Perform a light aerobic activity to increase blood flow to working muscles and stretch those muscles to avoid injury.
Cool-down
Gradually reduce the level of activity to help with the dispersal of lactic acid and avoid muscle stiffness.
How to prevent injuries
Playing to the rules and competition
Protective equipment/ clothing
Checking equipment and facilities
Why do we need the correct principles of training
You will need to apply the correct principles of training to avoid overuse injuries
Why must you play to the rules to prevent injury
All games and sports have rules so that there can be fair competition, rules help to insure players safety
How can protective equipment/clothing
Many activities require protective equipment or specific clothing. This depends on the sport or position
How does checking facilities and equipment prevent injuries
Organisers and officials, as well as participants, need to check for safety before and activity or competition
What does RICE stand for
Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate
Rest
Rest the injured area for 48 hours
Ice
Ice for 20 minutes at a time, 4 to 8 times per day
Compress
Compress to help reduce swelling
Elevate
Elevate the injured limb 6 to 10 inches above the heart
The 4 type of fractures
-Stress fractures
-Compound fractures
-In closed
-simple fracture
