SOC 25 Flashcards
Open skill
Always changing the environment. You are being forced under pressure by other players and the demands will change. For example the coach will change from passing to a keep ball session.
Closed skill
The situation and environment is constant and doesn’t change. You are not under pressure by anyone and you cannot be affected such as a freethrow or penalty.
Simple skill
A skill that requires little to no concentration. If a player is experienced then they will need little concentration when doing a side foot pass
Complex skill
A skill that requires a high amount of concentration. For example a penalty as you need to focus and get an accurate shot where you want the ball in the net.
Low organisation
A low organisation skill is a skill that can be broken down into steps. For example a freethrow in basketball.
High organisation
A high organisation skill is a skill that cannot be broken down specifically as it is harder to follow the steps. For example a sommersault as when you do the backflip you just have to swing over and hope for the best
Massed practice
A massed practice is where a certain skill is practiced continuously over and over in the same session. Usually done by experienced athletes.
Distributed practice
Distributed practice is where you practice a skill over a varoius amount of sessions instead of continuously over one. Usually done but less experienced athletes
Fixed practice
Where the skill is practiced over and over again continuously until it is perfected. For example you would use fixed practice for a free throw.
Variable practice
When the skill is practiced in a variety of different situations so that it can be adapted to be used in different environments
Visual guidance
When a coach or trainer visually shows you the practice usually given with little explanation as it is very straight forward for example a layup
Verbal guidance
When the trainer or coach verbally explains the situation and what he expects. Usually in more detail and easier to understand
Manual guidance
When the coach or train or physically moves you into position for example moving and positioning the players into a ruck
Mechanical guidance
Mechanical guidance is that you are being assisted by a device or machine using equipment for example the bungees on the trampoline helping you to jump higher and complete somersaults
Intrinsic feedback
When the performer themselves think about how they feel how they performed or what contribution you made to a team or game in the situation and criticise themselves and how they can do better next time
