Planes Flashcards
Sagittal plane
Divides the body from top to bottom, resulting in a left and a right side causing flexion and extension - front somersault (frontflip)
Frontal plane
Divides the body from top to bottom, but front and back sections causing adduction and abduction - cartwheel
Transverse plane
Divides the body across the middle (horizontally) giving a top sectiom (superior) and a bottom section (inferior) causing rotation - trampoline twist
What are the characteristics of a front and back piked somersault?
- face forward, with arms held upwards
- lean forward, lift seat and tuck in tightly, holding the position with hands on shins as you jump
- raise legs, extend them and stretch out body
- raise arms to slow down the rotation and land
What is a somersault?
Front and back somersaults are whole body movements in a saggital plane, around the frontal axis. For example, a gymnast competing on a trampoline.
What is a cartwheel?
A cartwheel is the frontal plane around the saggital axis
What are the characteristics of a cartwheel?
- you move sideways, from left to right or right to left in the frontal plane
- your body rotates around a line that runs from the front to the back of your body around the saggital axis.
- she swings her chest and arms down
- she moves into a straddled handstand
- she puts down a landing leg, and lifts her arms and chest sideways and upwards
- she returns to a standing position, with her hands and feet in a straight line
What is a twist jump?
When a trampolinist or athelte does a twist, they travel in a transverse (horizontal) plane around the vertical axis
- the key movement is not up or down, or from side to side, but around one spot - in the transverse plane
- they twist around an invisible line that runs from head to toe - around the vertical axis
What are the characteristics of a twist jump?
In a full twist jump, the performer starts facing one end of the trampoline and spins either to the right or to the left and completes a full 360 degree spin in a straight position. They finish facing the same direction that they started in and still in a vertical position
