Soc 20 Flashcards
Levers
Action being taken place with muscle and bones.
First class lever
fulcrum sits in the middle, between the load and the effort.
Second Class
In a second class leavers, the load sits between the fulcrum and effort
Second class example.
wheelbarrow is a good example. The wheel is the fulcrum, the handles take the effort, and the load is placed between them.
Third class
In a third class lever, the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load.
Third class levers examples
They enable you to convert small movements into large actions. To lift something with your hand, your muscles only had to contract a few centimetres. You may be exerting more effort, but you are living the load a far greater distance. If your arm were designed with a mechanical advantage, your muscles would have to contract a much longer distance than you wanted to move the object. Your elbow would be dragging on the floor
Second class in the body
When you planter flex your foot to raise your body up on your toes, you use the ankles as a second class lever system. The ball of your foot/toes acts as the fulcrum. The ankle planter-flexor muscles apply effort to the heel bone to lift your body (the load). Again, with a small effort, you can move a larger load.
First class in body
The head is a first class leaver system. Your neck muscles provide the effort to move your head (the load) around the top of your spine (the fulcrum). With a small effort, you can move a large load
