SOC 16 - The Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
Vascular shunting
process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
Immune system
the structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
Thrombokinase
Substance involved in blood clotting
Seretonin
Hormone that triggers the blood clotting process
Plasma
The fluid part of blood
Pathogen
an agent that causes disease, such as a virus.
Antibody
Chemical that destroys a pathogen
Blood pressure
Measure of force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body
Red blood cells
Transports oxygen to the bodies cells and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
White blood cells
The bodies first line of defence, they produce antbodies to help destroy pathogens and fight against infection and disease
Platelets
Platelets form in bone marrow and clot blood and form scabs to help stop and minimise blood loss
